Heartfelt Celebration for Fernando Mendoza

Elsa Mendoza, the mother of quarterback Fernando Mendoza, delivered an emotional speech at a gathering commemorating her son’s selection by the Raiders as the No. 1 overall pick.

In front of family and friends, Elsa shared her pride in both her son’s character and his football achievements. “Your kindness, humility, and faith make me so proud. I can’t emphasize it enough… I’m truly proud to be your mother,” she expressed.

She concluded her remarks with a spirited nod to Mendoza’s new team, saying, “Let’s go to the Raiders.”

Shortly after his selection, the NFL draft broadcast showed Mendoza at his childhood home in Coral Gables, Florida, beside his mother, who is in a wheelchair due to multiple sclerosis. The two shared a heartfelt hug moments before he donned his Raiders hat.

Mendoza opted to celebrate the occasion at home rather than attending the draft festivities in Pittsburgh, expressing a desire to be with his family. His mother, diagnosed with MS 15 years ago, has some mobility challenges, making the choice significant for both of them.

“My mom really wanted to do it at home, and so did my parents. It’s a lot easier for us,” said Mendoza in an interview, highlighting the importance of being surrounded by loved ones. “I wanted to stay home and create memories with everyone who has supported my football journey.” He felt that sharing the moment with a larger circle of family and friends was more meaningful than a small celebration in Pittsburgh.
