Fetterman Expresses Regret for Dismissing Lab Leak Theory During Fauci Hearing

Fetterman Expresses Regret Over Mocking Lab Leak Theory

Senator John Fetterman (D-Pennsylvania) expressed his regret on Wednesday regarding his previous dismissal of the “lab leak theory” concerning the origins of the coronavirus pandemic during a hearing featuring former Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, Anthony Fauci.

Fetterman, who has recently found himself at odds with members of his own party, remarked that valid inquiries into the virus’s origins have become politically charged. He stressed that future lawmakers should be open to examining evidence, irrespective of where the initial concerns originated.

“I think—I mean, there’s more than just regret here. In the beginning, there was a theory about the virus potentially emerging from a lab. It got labeled a right-wing theory pretty quickly. But now, it stands to reason—there’s a sophisticated lab nearby, and this unknown virus leaked out. Yet, it’s become a partisan issue. Now, more theories are surfacing suggesting a lab origin,” Fetterman stated during the hearing of the Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs.

He added, “I really hope that the next time something like this happens, we won’t allow ourselves to be blinded by partisan lines like I was. The truth can come from anywhere, and we should be ready to pursue it.”

Senator Rand Paul (R-Ky.) had earlier released Fauci’s diary after serving him with a subpoena prior to the hearing. The diary offers insight into Fauci’s daily activities, but it caught attention for his comments regarding his increasing notoriety both domestically and internationally.

In a diary entry from January 2020, Fauci, while publicly dismissing the lab leak theory, acknowledged in private discussions that many scientists believed the coronavirus could likely have originated from a lab.

During the hearing, Fauci invoked the Fifth Amendment over 100 times as he faced numerous questions from Republican lawmakers regarding his diary and his management of the pandemic response. Senator Paul mentioned there would be a panel vote to potentially hold Anthony Fauci in contempt for his lack of cooperation.
