Fetterman Reflects on State of the Union Handshake
Senator John Fetterman from Pennsylvania seemingly stood out as the only Democrat to greet President Donald Trump with a handshake during the recent State of the Union address. He expressed that the left’s actions, particularly in such settings, may not be beneficial for their cause.
“I think that to be true,” Fetterman remarked during an appearance on “America’s Newsroom,” discussing his handshake with Trump. “Of course, I shook his hand. He walked in, and I always will, of course,” he added.
Notably, many Democrats chose to skip Trump’s address, which was rife with confrontational moments between the president and liberal members of Congress. Trump has been known to criticize Democrats, prompting some to respond with shouts and protests, showcasing pins calling for the end of ICE and other messages.
Fetterman described the empty seats on the Democratic side as “disappointing,” voicing his sadness over colleagues’ absence. He pointed out that while it’s reasonable to disagree or refrain from applauding, constant interruptions—whether from Republicans or Democrats—are not respectful to the office of the president. “Please respect the office,” he urged.
Some Democrats opted to attend a counter-event, labeled the “State of the Swamp,” featuring actor Robert De Niro and members of the Portland Frog Brigade in inflatable costumes. Fetterman criticized this approach, suggesting that such antics wouldn’t resonate with everyday voters. “As a Democrat, I don’t believe that the frog dance will really move the ball as a party,” he stated.
