Fetterman Reflects on Democratic Party’s Defeat
Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pennsylvania) is expressing that last year’s significant loss for the Democrats was largely due to misguided policies, a disconnect from reality, and neglecting the very voters who once supported the party.
In his memoir titled “Unfettered,” Fetterman contends that the failures of Democratic leadership played a crucial role in President Donald Trump’s victory over former Vice President Kamala Harris, resulting in a major shift in Washington, D.C.
He emphasizes that the Democratic Party has become estranged from the working class, a once essential voter base.
Democrats Face Consequences Amid Government Shutdown
Fetterman highlighted that negative rhetoric regarding men, whether in speeches or legislative measures, has contributed to the Democratic Party being viewed as elitist—often prioritizing “celebrity endorsements” over genuine connection with voters. Those who supported Trump, he notes, found the Democrats to be overly accommodating and detached from the real-life concerns of average citizens.
“We have turned into a party of the elite, having lost touch with our core supporters,” he remarked. “The continued negative discourse surrounding men definitely carries ramifications.”
He further added a somewhat humorous observation: “If a man had a choice between attending a party or hosting his own, I think most would opt to host their own.”
His book, which debuted on Tuesday, arrives at a critical time for the Democratic Party as it seeks a cohesive message to rejuvenate its image with voters and achieve solidarity within Congress.
Government Shutdown Dynamics
This context follows a government shutdown where Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and a majority of his colleagues maintained a united front, demanding the resolution of expiring Obamacare subsidies before reopening the government.
Schumer has faced criticism from progressive factions for failing to keep Senate Democrats, including Fetterman, from siding with Republicans during this period.
Despite occasionally differing from Schumer’s stance, especially during the shutdown, Fetterman chose to address the senator lightly, referencing Schumer’s 2023 decision to relax the Senate’s dress code to accommodate his casual attire, which often includes a hoodie and basketball shorts.
However, Schumer later abandoned this effort early in 2024.
Concerns Over Immigration Policy
Fetterman feels strongly that one of the party’s major missteps has been in handling immigration. While he identifies as pro-immigration, he stresses the urgency of confronting the escalating crisis at the southern border during Biden’s administration.
He critiques the Democrats’ assertion that “open borders is a compassionate policy,” arguing that it fails to reflect the reality of the situation.
“The situation is chaotic, impacting both immigrants and our citizens who are overwhelmed by the sudden influx of individuals in need,” he wrote.
Fetterman believes this immigration stance significantly contributed to Republican gains in the 2024 election, explaining, “Democrats assured voters that the border was secure, telling them not to believe their own observations. I think this played a crucial role in the outcome.” He concluded, “You can’t advise people to disregard what they see and expect to win.”
