Caitlin Clark’s Status Raises Questions Ahead of Fever’s Game
Caitlin Clark reported feeling good following her return from a back injury, yet coach Stephanie White kept her sidelined for the Fever’s matchup against the Phoenix Mercury. This decision on Thursday was puzzling for many observers.
Clark had just played a limited 16 minutes against the Los Angeles Sparks, and despite the loss, she felt optimistic about how her body responded. “After the game, I told my trainers it was disappointing not to win or play as well, but I see this as a win given how I felt physically,” Clark expressed. “I barely felt any fatigue,” she added.
Before the Sparks game, the Fever had already ruled her out for the upcoming Mercury match, citing “rest” as the reason. Coach White mentioned earlier that the plan was to alternate playing time between Clark and All-Star Aliyah Boston. “Yeah, I just took a few shots,” White commented. “Boston will be out again tonight, but Caitlin will be active this game, and then they’ll switch for the next.” However, Clark’s encouraging assessment did not alter that initial plan.
Clark is pivotal to the Fever’s performance and certainly, her well-being is a priority for the team. On Wednesday, she played in brief spurts, which proved to be an ineffective strategy. “It’s really tough to get into a rhythm playing just three-minute stretches,” she noted. While she felt she had some good opportunities, the inconsistent game flow made it challenging. Nonetheless, she took away the positive feeling from her body’s response.
The Fever (12-9) will now face another challenge against the Mercury without their key playmaker. White’s cautious approach might prove beneficial down the line, but the shift from a limited playtime to resting altogether raises some eyebrows.
As the situation unfolds, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how this all plays out for Clark and the Fever.
