Fire Erupts at Dominican Republic Resort, Leaving One Dead

A large fire at the Viva Wyndham Dominicus Beach Hotel in Bayahibe, Dominican Republic, occurred on Friday, resulting in the death of an Italian tourist and several injuries.

The victim, 46-year-old Francesca Valentino, tragically lost her life during the incident, as confirmed by the Dominican Republic’s Directorate of Extrahospital Emergency Services (DAEH).

Additionally, nine other individuals sustained injuries, with three needing medical treatment beyond the hotel’s facilities, according to a statement by DAEH.

In response to the emergency, local authorities evacuated about 1,690 tourists from the resort, as reported by the Associated Press.

“Preliminary observations suggest the fire spread swiftly, likely due to the flammable palm roof structure and windy conditions,” officials indicated.

Aerial footage captured the dramatic scene, showing thick smoke rising from numerous beachfront buildings and casting a shadow over the clear waters.

Guests were relocated to nearby accommodations, including the Viva Wyndham Dominicus Palace, which reportedly sustained no damage in the fire.

The Dominican Republic’s Emergency Operations Center (COE) reassured that tourism activities in Bayahibe and surrounding areas remain unaffected and are continuing safely.

Video footage of the aftermath depicted drones working to douse the residual flames and manage the smoldering structures.

Further comments from DAEH, COE, and Wyndham Hotels and Resorts have been requested for additional clarity on the situation.
