Over the weekend, an arson attack occurred at a Washington State Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) field office, where evidence of fire damage and shattered glass was evident.
Deputy Chief of Homeland Security Tricia McLaughlin reported that the suspect, who remains unidentified, initially threw a rock through a window of the building in Yakima before igniting a fire behind the property on Saturday.
Images captured by journalist Nick Sort show the aftermath, highlighting charred areas and broken windows at the ICE office.
A local CBS affiliate, KREM2, reported that Washington had seen at least 817 ICE arrests in 2025, with a significant rise in June when around 275 individuals were taken into custody.
House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan accused Washington Attorney General Nick Brown of hindering federal immigration enforcement in a letter, citing concerns about the state’s sanctuary policies that he claims may have endangered lives.
According to Jordan, these illegal immigration policies are putting local law enforcement in a tough spot when they should be cooperating with federal regulations.
He mentioned that an ex-ICE official indicated, during a committee interview, that at least one murder might have been preventable had local authorities chosen to partner with ICE.
Fortunately, there have been no reported injuries from the arson incident in Yakima, and local police are currently investigating.
McLaughlin could not confirm if the fire was aimed specifically at ICE personnel, but she pointed out that the building is marked as a DHS office.
She noted a staggering 830% increase in attacks on ICE staff since the Trump administration took steps for widespread deportations, which coincided with growing tensions surrounding illegal immigration policies.
McLaughlin expressed her view, stating that certain Democratic leaders like Hakeem Jeffries and the mayors of Boston and Los Angeles have contributed to this rise in violence against ICE officers through their public rhetoric.
She criticized such statements as comparing ICE to the Nazi Gestapo and emphasized that this type of violent dialogue from sanctuary politicians is completely unacceptable.
She concluded by reinforcing the stance of Secretary Kristi Noem: anyone who seeks to harm law enforcement officials will face serious legal consequences.
