Federal prosecutors say a fired 30-year-old bus driver from Virginia then cheated the system by selling more than 100 fake driver’s licenses.
Ashya Janai Hurley admitted to running a fake driver’s license scam for more than a year, charging illegal customers $300 for each standard license and $450 for each commercial driver’s license. She faces 15 years in prison when sentenced in September. The federal government announced.
In all, she created 124 counterfeit licenses, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Eastern Virginia.
Prosecutors said Harley ran the illegal services from at least May 2022 to August 2023, obtaining clients through personal ads, her Instagram account and referrals from friends.
Using his own false documents, Hurley briefly worked as a bus driver for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority in July 2022, but was fired in October after failing to complete training.
Prosecutors said she began selling counterfeit licenses during her training, but that wasn’t the reason she was fired. It’s unclear why she was fired.
Harley electronically falsified driving records, proof of residency and other records in order to apply for driver’s licenses.
The operation oversaw the creation of 54 fake license applications and included her mother’s address in Alexandria on more than 67 proof of residency documents.
The verdict is scheduled for September 26th.
