Teacher Under Investigation for Controversial Video
An elementary school teacher in San Diego has stirred controversy after posting a video on social media where she holds an “Abolish ICE” sign next to an upside-down American flag in her classroom.
Bailey Hill Ringer, who teaches first grade at Audubon Elementary School, is currently being investigated by the San Diego Unified School District due to the backlash that ensued after the video went viral.
In a brief 22-second clip, shared on X, the 27-year-old educator is seen taking down the American flag from the wall, flipping it upside down, all while “The Hanging Tree” from “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1” plays in the background.
Later in the video, Ringer is seen boldly stapling the “Abolish ICE” sign beside the upside-down flag, which many interpreted as a provocative statement.
The clip, which was reportedly deleted from her TikTok account, ignited a wave of criticism online. Many observers condemned her actions, labeling them as “unacceptable” and calling for her termination.
One commenter expressed outrage, stating, “Fire her! Have you forgotten you teach in a public school?” Another added that “there is no place for symbols of protest around first graders.” Some insisted that “politics and activism need to be kept out of the classroom,” with others referring to the incident as “disgraceful” and even suggesting that parents homeschool their children.
The school district confirmed on Tuesday that Ringer’s video is under review. James Canning, a spokesperson for the district, stated that the school is aware of the situation and that classes are proceeding normally. He emphasized that the matter would be evaluated according to district policies and procedures, although specific details cannot be disclosed because it is a personal issue.
The district’s social media policy warns that employees could face consequences for online actions that may disrupt school operations. Ringer has not responded to requests for comment regarding the incident.
