Missile and Drone Attack in Kyiv
KYIV, Ukraine – A significant missile and drone assault targeting Kyiv occurred early Friday, resulting in five deaths and causing fires, with debris strewn across the city, according to Ukrainian officials. At least 34 individuals were reported injured, including a pregnant woman.
Timur Tkachenko, the military administrator for Kyiv, stated that emergency services responded to several attacks throughout the night. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy mentioned that the assault involved at least 430 drones and 18 missiles, which inflicted considerable damage to buildings in the area.
Since its full-scale invasion nearly four years ago, Russia has conducted a relentless air campaign against Ukraine. Efforts led by the U.S. and others to mediate peace this year have not yet succeeded.
Zelenskyy noted that the strikes mainly targeted Kyiv, hitting high-rise apartments, but attacks were also reported in Odessa and Kharkov. He described the incident as a “specially calculated attack to cause as much damage as possible to people and civilians.”
The Russian government, however, claims that it does not target civilians. The Ministry of Defense asserted that the overnight strikes were aimed at “military industrial and energy facilities,” an assertion that Ukrainian officials dismissed, indicating the persistent damage to residential areas and public infrastructure.
This attack marked the largest on Kyiv in three weeks, following a series of airstrikes focused on power facilities across the nation as winter approaches.
According to Zelenskiy, Ukraine utilized the U.S.-made Patriot air defense system and managed to shoot down 14 missiles. He also appealed for more advanced weapon systems from international allies.
In the Odessa region, Russian drones targeted the downtown area, particularly Chorno Mosque, leading to two fatalities and seven injuries, as reported by the head of the regional military administration, Oleh Kipel.
Local residents recounted their harrowing experiences during the nighttime attacks. Maria Kharchenko expressed her disbelief that she survived when her building was struck. “I didn’t hear anything. I just realized my hair was on fire,” she recounted, describing the chaos around her.
Another resident, Ole Hudima, shared his near-miss experience. He planned to head to the air raid shelter but hesitated. “I got up, got dressed, went outside, and there was an explosion. I didn’t hear the engine,” he said.
City officials have warned of potential power and water outages. Damage has been reported across eight of Kyiv’s ten districts, with emergency teams working to contain fires caused by the explosions.
Mykola Kalashnik, the regional military governor, reported that airstrikes in the greater Kyiv area caused harm to essential infrastructure and led to at least one serious injury among civilians, with a man from Bila Tserkva being hospitalized for burns. A fire also broke out in a private residence on the outskirts of the city.
The strikes come amid European Union discussions urging Ukraine to address corruption, particularly following a major scandal involving its nuclear energy authority. Still, officials assured support would continue as Kyiv seeks to counter Russian advances.
In retaliation, Ukraine launched domestic drones at targets in Russia, focusing on oil refineries and storage facilities that fund Moscow’s military efforts.
Russian defense authorities claimed to have shot down 216 Ukrainian drones overnight across various regions, including annexed Crimea, but did not comment on missiles.
Zelenskyy indicated that Ukraine had used a modified version of the Neptune missile for operations deep within Russia. In response, Russia’s Ministry of Defense condemned Ukraine for targeting civilian establishments and claimed the assault on Kyiv was retaliatory.
Reports emerged that over 60 Ukrainian drones were intercepted in Krasnodar, bordering Crimea, with additional units shot down throughout other areas. The regional governor noted that an attack in Novorossiysk caused damage to an oil depot, along with a civilian ship that resulted in injuries to crew members.
In the Saratov region, local officials mentioned that the attack affected unspecified civilian infrastructure, with unverified reports indicating that a refinery may have sustained damage.
