Florida AG Investigates “Pride Dance” Event
Florida’s Attorney General, James Usmieryer, has issued a subpoena to Vero Beach’s Vice Mayor, Linda Moore, amid an investigation into the “Pride Dance” event held at the Kilted Mermaid bar last month, as noted in a press release from the AG’s office.
Moore had shared details about the event on social media, promoting it as “welcome all ages.”
According to the AG’s office, there’s evidence suggesting that sexualized performances took place during the event, potentially exposing children to inappropriate content.
Usmieryer emphasized Florida’s laws, stating, “Florida law protects children from sexualisation. The evidence suggests that there were adult performers interacting with children inappropriately.”
He mentioned that they are seeking various materials related to the event, including surveillance footage and details about the participants. The subpoena requires Moore and the Kilted Mermaid to provide these documents by 9 a.m. on August 8.
Attempts to contact the Kilted Mermaid for comments were unsuccessful, as they declined to engage. However, Moore defended the event, stating, “We hold this every year as a family-friendly pride event. We advise parents to ensure their children aren’t present during more adult-oriented performances.”
Moore also highlighted that the initial drag performance was intended to be suitable for all audiences. Meanwhile, Usmieryer remarked that the state’s priorities include protecting children from perceived adult indecency.
In a separate context, the AG has also requested the Supreme Court’s support for continuing a contentious immigration law.
The Kilted Mermaid plans to hold a “Drag Queen Bingo” event at the end of the month, which, according to their social media, is restricted to those aged 18 and older.
