A Florida father of three lost his life trying to break up a fight between a couple shortly after he had just dropped his daughter off at school.
Darryl Alexander Hill, aged 56, was reportedly shot by Raul Vasquez, 26, while attempting to intervene during a disturbance on the street at about 8:30 a.m. Tuesday in Apopka, Florida, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.
As stated in an arrest affidavit, the fight began inside a pickup truck, which led to a crash involving another SUV and spilled out onto the street.
After taking his 10-year-old daughter to Wolf Lake Elementary School, Hill was riding his motorcycle when he noticed the altercation and decided to help.
He and the couple ended up in a struggle, and during the scuffle, Hill fell into some bushes as he attempted to escape.
Vasquez then allegedly retrieved a gun from his vehicle and shot Hill in the back, shocking onlookers.
Witnesses recounted that Hill shouted “help me” before being shot.
Ryan Harper, who was driving his children to school at the time, described hearing a “loud bang” before seeing Hill’s body lying on the road. “It’s pretty traumatic for all of us,” he remarked.
Authorities reported that Vasquez was arrested on charges of second-degree murder, noting that Hill was merely trying to assist someone in distress.
Meanwhile, Hill’s wife, Suzanne, said she was tracking his phone and noticed it hadn’t moved for an hour. Concerned, she drove home only to discover a crime scene. “Thankfully, I didn’t see the scene, but seeing the detectives confirmed my worst nightmares,” she shared.
Less than an hour after being shot, Hill was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
Suzanne organized a memorial for her husband, who was also a father to two adult children. An Orange County police officer referred to Hill as a “Good Samaritan.”
“He was just an incredibly kind, generous, caring, and loving person to everyone,” she said, reflecting on his character. “He always stepped in to help others, and I suppose that’s what ultimately led to his tragic end.”
Family friend Camil Reyes described Hill’s death as a testament to his humanity. “Darryl was loved by many. He had an infectious personality and could bring joy to those around him. He will be sorely missed,” Reyes remarked.
Maria Vasquez, Superintendent of Orange County Public Schools, noted that Hill was “a ray of light for his family and those around him, always quick to respond to requests from the school community.”
She added that experiencing such a sudden and tragic loss is profoundly difficult for family and friends.
Vasquez remains in the Orange County Jail facing second-degree murder charges. He was seen in a white prison uniform, appearing distressed as he was escorted to a vehicle.
His criminal history includes two prior arrests for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, but he was denied bail.
