A Florida fisherman was attacked after falling in shark-infested waters while visiting the Bahamas last month. He suffered a wound just inches from an artery, the report said. new york post.
Marlin Wakeman, 24, was spending time at the Flying Fish Marina on Long Island on April 26 when he tried to jump onto a moored boat that was being worked on at the time. He said he was “constantly thinking” about the possibility of falling into the water.
Wakeman said he and his friends were “talking about how if we fall here, it’s over. We wouldn’t have a second to really react.”
“When we reached the water, we pretty much knew what was going to happen,” the fisherman said. “And when he bit me, I knew what was going on. There was never a question in my mind for a second.”
NBC News report Wakeman said the area was always swarming with sharks because of the amount of dead fish that fishermen dumped in the water. He went on to say that Caribbean white sharks are so concentrated in the area that they “can almost walk on your head.”
After Wakeman fell into the ocean, one shark quickly bit him in the knee, and a second shark bit him in the shoulder.
“When we reached the water, we pretty much knew what was going to happen,” the fisherman said. “And when he bit me, I knew what was going on. There was never a question in my mind for a second.”
Wakeman said the first shark pulled him under and eventually released him. He said he was lucky that the shark “didn’t shake its head or hold on for a while.”
After the shark let go, he was able to rise to the surface. However, it wasn’t long before a second shark jumped in and bit him on the shoulder. Wakeman said the initial bite didn’t hurt, saying it felt more like a “punch.”
Despite his severe injuries, Wakeman was able to climb into the boat under his own power.
“Adrenaline was rushing through my body, it was like fight or flight,” he said.
“I went back to the boat and saw what happened and looked at my leg. It wasn’t really bleeding yet. It was, you know, completely torn to shreds.”
After examining the wound, Wakeman screamed for help. The captain rushed to him, applied a tourniquet and lifted his leg. He didn’t feel any pain until doctors began pushing him in a wheelbarrow into a van to take him to the hospital, according to reports.
“At that point I was losing a lot of blood, the adrenaline wore off a little bit, and then I got in the van,” he said.
“And when I was in the van, they took the gauze off. And I remember the captain looking at me and being like, ‘Dude, this is going to hurt real bad.’ ”And I was like, “Okay, whatever.” ”
After those words, Wakeman said he blacked out from the pain.
