Florida Gators Struggle Against Missouri Tigers

The Florida Gators are far from being the powerhouse team they once were, not even resembling their 2019 self. On Saturday, the eighth-ranked Gators faced a daunting challenge in Columbia, Missouri, where they were decisively defeated 45-17 by the Tigers.

Missouri showcased its strength, dominating in all aspects of the game and racking up an impressive total of 560 yards. In stark contrast, Florida’s ground game was stifled, managing a mere 42 yards, which is pretty shocking when you think about it.

Jadan Baugh, who leads the SEC in rushing yards, struggled significantly, only able to muster 13 yards on 12 carries. It’s clear that Missouri’s game plan included neutralizing him effectively, as head coach Eli Drinkwitz mentioned after the game.

Meanwhile, Missouri’s quarterback, Austin Simmons, turned in a stellar performance, throwing for 340 yards and two touchdowns, completely dismantling Florida’s pass defense. They rebounded beautifully from a tough loss against Mississippi State last week, marking their first home victory against a ranked opponent since 2024.

For the Gators, Faurot Field has historically been a tough place to play, and this game was no different. After halftime, the contest never felt close, and Florida’s normally potent offense never posed a threat to the Tigers.

Now, first-year head coach Jon Sumrall faces a difficult task of reassessing the team and addressing several pressing questions. The upcoming schedule is also challenging; the Gators will host South Carolina before traveling to Texas and then facing their archrival Georgia.

This stretch will be crucial for both the team and their new coach as they look to prove themselves. Florida’s experience as a top-ten team hasn’t gone as smoothly as they would have liked, and they have some work ahead to regain that status. Right now, though, this loss is going to sting for a while.
