Florida man shoots and kills neighbors over dispute about basketball hoop; police say video proves it wasn’t self-defense

Florida police say a man opened fire. killed my neighbor The entire exchange was captured on surveillance video over an argument over a basketball hoop.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office said in an arrest report that 63-year-old Norman Scott confronted his neighbor on May 4 and shot them both around 5:30 p.m. The victims were identified as Tara Marie Jones and Taylor Glenn Jones.

The altercation took place outside Mr and Mrs Jones’ home on Galleria Street in Wellington’s Black Diamond housing development.

“There’s a lot more to this case than we know right now.”

Witnesses told investigators that Scott asked the man if he had heard anything before pleading guilty.

Scott reportedly told the witness, “Don’t worry, I shot them both.”

Scott called 911 to report the shooting and claimed he shot in self-defense. He also allegedly told another witness that he was attacked first.

But police said surveillance footage from Jones’ camera showed one of the victims stepping back with his hands in the air, before Scott fired three or four shots at Jones. The man then allegedly shot the woman and fired two more shots at the first victim, who was walking away.

Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives said Taylor-Jones acted in a threatening manner toward Scott “at no time during this encounter.” They were able to retrieve a spent shell casing from a 9mm gun near the body and found the gun on a table inside Scott’s home.

Scott was charged with two counts of first-degree murder using a firearm. He is being held without bail at the Palm Beach County Jail.

Scott’s attorney, Brian Puckett, told WPTV-TV that Scott attended church and worked as a mechanic.

“There are two people who died,” Paquette added. “It’s extremely tragic. All I can say is there’s a lot more to this case than we know right now.”

WPTV also reported that Scott has no criminal history.

Wellington is a village of approximately 61,000 people located just west of West Palm Beach.
