Florida man, struggling after a tough breakup, discovered trapped in mud days after going missing on Valentine's Day

This was quite a harrowing story.

A Florida man, devastated after a breakup, went missing on Valentine’s Day and was discovered submerged in mud at a sand mill on Monday. He had been without food or water and nearly lost his life.

Andrew Giddens, 36, was located caught in mud near the Vulcan sand mill eight days after his father reported him missing.

According to his father, the last time they talked was on February 14. Giddens had been feeling down following a recent breakup and vanished shortly after talking to family and friends.

A search began after a deputy, who had previously encountered Giddens during a trespassing incident at the mill in 2023, spotted his abandoned vehicle on the property.

After two exhausting days of searching, emergency responders and factory staff found him buried in mud, nearly submerged up to his shoulders and surprisingly hidden beneath grass.

Fortunately, Giddens was still responsive and managed to communicate with those who discovered him, though he was too entrenched to pull out immediately.

Fire departments from nearby areas responded to the situation and took over two hours to carefully rescue him from the mud.

Initially, they attempted to use ropes to drag him out, but ultimately resorted to ladders and digging tools to execute a safer extraction.

The Palatka Fire Department emphasized the importance of teamwork and training, expressing gratitude to all involved in the rescue.

Giddens was taken to the hospital in critical condition after enduring several days without sustenance in the harsh environment.

Given his mental health struggles, officials decided not to press any charges related to trespassing.

It remains unclear why he wandered onto the property or how he ended up getting trapped in the mud.
