Florida Mother Arrested for Leaving Toddler in Hot Car

An 18-year-old mother from Florida took her young siblings and her two-year-old daughter to see “The Smurfs” at Regal Cinema 90 in Lake City last Saturday. According to WFOX-TV, the daughter was crying during the movie, prompting her mother to leave the theater repeatedly to calm her down.

However, Lake City Police noted that Tipora Merriex, the mother, had left her daughter inside the car, which wasn’t a safe situation. She was reportedly frustrated with her daughter’s tears and returned to watch the movie after leaving the child.

A theater employee informed investigators about Merriex’s demeanor, stating she appeared “very frustrated” during her daughter’s crying. This incident brings to light serious concerns about child safety.

Witnesses reported seeing Merriex go back and forth to the theater after accidentally locking herself out of the vehicle. When police arrived around 6 PM, they found the toddler “visibly suffering” in the car, with temperatures outside reaching 94 degrees, feeling like 107 due to humidity.

Authorities broke the driver’s side window to free the child, who was found sweating and crying. The child was taken to a medical facility for care, and Merriex was arrested on felony child neglect charges and taken to the Columbia County Detention Center.

Comments from local residents have been severe; Debbie Spencer, a resident of Lake City, said, “I have raised a child and have never left a child in the car for more than a minute. That’s scary.” Another local remarked, “I can’t believe people do that. Yeah, that’s bad.”

Merriex’s arrest report indicated a casual attitude regarding her child’s well-being, which raises even more alarm. Her bail has been set at $50,000, and she was released earlier this week.
