South Florida Dominates Hockey Scene
It’s clear: South Florida is making waves in the hockey world.
The Florida Panthers, yes, my cherished Panthers, have clinched two consecutive Stanley Cup Championships and bagged three straight Eastern Conference titles. But maybe, just maybe, this team isn’t just basking in past glory. General Manager Bill Zito has been making moves for over five years now that could solidify a dynasty.
As the celebrations die down and the offseason kicks in, Zito has voiced his trust in the ability to re-sign three pivotal free agents: center Sam Bennett, the ever-controversial Brad Marchand, and defender Aaron Ekblad. It’s something that many in the league doubted would happen… but, well, they were wrong. The NHL must be feeling a bit anxious about this.
Bennett, the playoff MVP, was the first to seal the deal with an eight-year, $64 million extension prior to the NHL Draft. Florida also signed Ekblad, the top pick in the 2014 NHL Draft, to an eight-year contract announced on Monday. But that wasn’t the only significant move.
Amidst the offseason chatter, the big question was whether they could retain Marchand, who, after being traded to South Florida, was seen as a potential game-changer. He showcased his skills by scoring ten goals during the playoff run, proving he’s still a star in the league. Would he really leave after all this success?
Nope! In what might feel like a heart-wrenching moment for Canadian fans, Marchand re-signed with the Panthers, locking in a six-year deal ensuring he makes over $5 million annually.
This remarkable chapter for the Panthers is concluding, at least for now:
It’s noteworthy that several players are signed up until the 2030 season:
- Alexander Barkov: 2030
- Matthew Tkachuk: 2030
- Sam Reinhart: 2032
- Sam Bennett: 2033
- Carter Verhaeghe: 2033
- Brad Marchand: 2031
- Anton Randell: 2030
- Seth Jones: 2030
- Aaron Ekblad: 2033
- Gustav: 2032
The core is shaping up, and who knows? A ten-peat could be on the horizon. Go Cats!
