Florida Sailor Dies After Rescuing Children in Hawaii

A Florida sailor stationed in Hawaii tragically lost his life after rescuing two children from the turbulent waters of Waiapua’a Bay.

Marksman 1st Class Jeffrey Diaz, 47, passed away on Saturday, according to a statement from the Kauai Police Department.

Diaz, who was based at the Pacific Missile Range facility in Barking Sands, jumped into the water to help the children struggling against the high waves. While the kids made it back to shore safely, Diaz encountered difficulties in the water.

Local authorities, including the Marine Safety Authority and Barking Sands Fire and Emergency Services, later retrieved him from the water and attempted life-saving measures.

Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead at Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital.

In response to the loss, Capt. Robert Prince, commander of the Pacific Missile Launch Complex, expressed his sorrow over Diaz’s death, calling him a “sailor and friend.” He extended heartfelt condolences to Diaz’s family, friends, and fellow sailors.

“We are thankful to the first responders and everyone who stepped in to help,” Prince added. “Our commitment to supporting his family and all those impacted during this hard time remains strong.”

Authorities are conducting an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death, but have indicated that no foul play is suspected.

The Kauai Police Department has also offered condolences to Diaz’s loved ones during this challenging period.
