Miami Survives Florida State in Overtime Thriller
This season has seen Florida State struggle while Miami has remained undefeated, and both of these patterns continued on a chaotic day filled with unexpected finishes. In a gripping game that extended into two overtimes, the Hurricanes managed to edge out an upset from their archrival, Florida State University (FSU), winning 43-35.
Miami quarterback Darian Mensah completed 326 passing yards and threw three touchdown passes, including a decisive 3-yarder to Malachi Toney in the second overtime. Toney also contributed significantly with 154 receiving yards and even tossed a 2-point conversion pass to Cooper Barkate. The win was finally sealed by Miami defensive back Bryce Fitzgerald, who made an interception on the last play of the game.
As for Florida State, quarterback Ashton Daniels had a solid performance with 298 yards and four touchdowns. His teammate Duce Robinson made crucial contributions late in the game, catching two touchdown passes, one of which was a stunning 75-yarder that tied the game with under three minutes left in regulation, and another 20-yard score to kick off the first overtime.
With a history of underperformance, Florida State head coach Mike Norvell has faced ongoing speculation regarding his future with the team, particularly as the Seminoles have struggled with their record in recent years. Since a loss in the 2023 Orange Bowl against Georgia, the team has now dropped 14 consecutive games away from home, making matters worse with a grim 0-13 record in road games against ranked opponents since 2017.
