Brawl Erupts After High School Protest in Nebraska
A 54-year-old man was taken into custody on charges related to child abuse following an altercation with high school students protesting against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
On Monday around 1:30 p.m., roughly 150 students exited Grand Island High School in Nebraska, marching down College Street where they confronted Michael Brown.
Eyewitnesses report that as he drove by, Brown made pro-ICE comments, which seemed to provoke one of the students to throw a water bottle at him, hitting him in the face.
In response, Brown exited his vehicle and pursued a female student, believing she was the culprit. This led to several students attacking him, kicking and punching him as he fell to the ground.
Video circulating on social media shows Brown bloodied and struggling as at least three male students can be seen trying to engage him further. A teacher from Westlawn Elementary School reportedly stepped in to break up the confrontation.
The school clarified that this protest was entirely organized by the students and had no official backing from teachers or administrators. Those who participated were marked absent for the day.
Police Chief Dean Elliott indicated that Brown faced child abuse charges, likely due to the significant age gap between him and the students. Notably, one student involved was also charged with assault.
According to the police report, Brown allegedly injured a 16-year-old and a 17-year-old male.
A local news report mentioned that the protest was described as “peaceful,” without any details on the skirmish. Footage from the demonstration featured students waving Mexican flags.
