Lindy Lee, a former prominent Democratic fundraiser, argues that President Joe Biden’s attempt to explain his decision to run for re-election in 2024 may actually backfire, particularly amid rising concerns about his age and mental acuity.
She thinks that Biden’s upcoming memoir, “Promise Me, America,” mainly serves to address the struggles within the Democratic Party following their defeat in the last election.
Lee sees the book as a small-scale representation of Biden’s presidency in many ways.
“They’re just wondering, ‘Why can’t you be quiet?'” she remarked. “Before I departed the party, there was a palpable disconnect. The sentiment was so negative that when Biden left office on July 21, there wasn’t even a farewell gathering, just a small event for his staff.” She expressed disappointment in the party’s treatment of Biden.
Lee further commented on Jill Biden, saying, “Instead of enjoying her retirement, she’s pushing him to write books no one seems interested in.” She added that it felt like she was the one rallying for his presidency, which, frankly, wasn’t something Democrats were eager for either. “He should have stepped back a decade or two ago, but they seem to need the income,” she said.
Biden spoke about his forthcoming book in a recent post, stating, “This addresses the challenges our nation faces and the decisions I’ve made along the way.” This seems to have drawn some criticism online, with people questioning the timing and intentions behind the book’s release.
Comments from notable figures included skepticism about whether Biden actually wrote the book himself, with some questioning if an autopen was used.
Lee, who has her own book, “Unburdened,” set to release later this year, indicated that there were significant internal debates and concerns about Biden’s support long before he eventually withdrew from the 2024 race.
She now fears that if Biden were to step down, it could further tarnish his public image—something his campaign has tried to carefully manage.
Lee recounted an incident from a 2023 event where the Biden campaign confiscated her phone to avoid any negative posts about him. “They knew I was active on social media and called to have me delete anything related to him because he appeared weak,” she explained.
Now, she believes this aspect of his presidency could exacerbate frustrations among Democrats who are itching to move on from the last election and reconsider why Biden wasn’t prompted to resign earlier. “They seem to have been focused on hiding a candidate they were ashamed of rather than presenting one they could stand behind,” she concluded.
