Mark Moran Drops Senate Bid to Challenge Prosecutor
WASHINGTON — Mark Moran, known for his controversial stint on reality TV, has announced he is stepping back from his independent run for the U.S. Senate. Instead, he plans to set his sights on a prosecutor funded by George Soros.
During an interview that stretched over an hour, Moran indicated he no longer views a successful campaign against Democratic Senator Mark Warner as realistic. Just moments before, he mentioned contemplating a challenge against Steve Descano, the left-leaning Commonwealth’s Attorney for Fairfax County, in 2027.
When pressed about whether he would continue in the Senate race, Moran made his resignation clear. “I’m going to step back from that and give this a chance to make a point because I don’t think there’s a viable way for me to win,” he stated.
Moran acknowledged that his decision would probably please many on the left. “But what they’ve also learned is that just because I’m not running for the Senate doesn’t mean I won’t speak my mind,” he added.
Moreover, he pondered if a federal position was truly the best way to initiate change in Northern Virginia. “What could I actually change in the place where I grew up? How can we make it safer?” he questioned.
“Once I came to that realization, it hit me—I was focusing on the wrong thing,” Moran explained.
He mentioned ongoing federal investigations related to allegations of petition fraud stemming from his earlier attempt to qualify as a Democratic candidate.
The deadline for collecting signatures to qualify for the Democratic primary was April 2, the same day he declared his independent candidacy. Moran shared that he has gathered 11,436 digital signatures for this new pathway.
Deciding whether to take on Descano will hinge largely on fundraising efforts, he noted, but he has ideas about what changes he would implement if successful.
Moran suggested that, if elected, he would undertake a “100-day review of all 80 individuals” linked to the Democratic Party. He expressed intentions to scrutinize crime statistics during his time as prosecutor, which began in January 2020. “If we find that the prosecutor’s office is wrong, we will fire them,” he asserted. “We will address sex crimes and domestic violence relentlessly.”
Since 2019, Descano’s campaign has reportedly received over $600,000 from political action committees associated with Soros. In 2022, Descano’s office reached a plea deal after Ronnie Leal confessed to sexually abusing minors, and later, he was observed traveling with a missing 17-year-old. The Justice Department announced an investigation into Descano’s prosecution methods earlier this May.
Fairfax County, one of the wealthiest in the nation, leans heavily Democratic, as demonstrated by former Vice President Kamala Harris’s significant win in the 2024 election.
Additionally, Moran has plans to accept a teaching position at Appalachian School of Law in Grundy, Virginia. He stated that his focus there would be on “embracing the power of stories.”
A spokesperson from the law school indicated they are considering offering Moran a role on the board, though details remain unconfirmed.
Moran first captured public attention in 2021 as a contestant on HBO Max’s “FBoy Island,” where he competed against other men for the affection of show participants.
Before his party switch, Moran had expressed criticism regarding Virginia Democrats’ stance on gun control and the perceived gerrymandering of the state’s House map. “I try to boil everything down to the principle of fairness. A gerrymandered map is morally offensive to everyone,” he had said back in March.
