Former Kansas Basketball Player Charged with Attempted Murder
A former player for the Kansas men’s basketball team is facing serious charges, including attempted first-degree murder, following an incident earlier this month.
LaGerald Vick, who played with the Jayhawks from 2015 to 2019, also faces charges related to using a firearm during a felony. A report from a local outlet noted the details of the case.
Vick was apprehended by Memphis police on Saturday and is currently held in Shelby County Jail, with bail set at an astonishing $1.5 million.
The charges stem from a shooting that occurred on July 5. This incident prompted a police response, and the victim was subsequently taken to Regional One Hospital for treatment.
According to the victim, she was attending a party around 11 p.m. on July 4 when an argument broke out with a man. The man, armed with a handgun, fired a shot as he attempted to flee, striking the victim in the back.
She was transported to the hospital by a private vehicle.
The victim provided investigators with the first name of the alleged shooter, leading them to Vick, who was later identified in a photo lineup.
Vick is expected to appear in court for arraignment on Monday and has a bail review hearing scheduled for Tuesday.
This isn’t Vick’s first brush with the law. Earlier this year, he faced charges that included felonies related to aggravated robbery, theft, and criminal damage to property. In that incident, he allegedly broke into his ex-girlfriend’s home, stealing electronic devices and tampering with a surveillance camera.
He has another court date set for July 30 regarding that case.
During his freshman year at Kansas, a Title IX investigation concluded that he likely assaulted a female student, reportedly punching her multiple times and kicking her.
Throughout his college career, Vick started 41 games and played in a total of 94, averaging 14.1 points per game as a senior before leaving the team in early February.
