Keith J. Kelly Inducted into Journalism Hall of Fame
Renowned columnist Keith J. Kelly, who made a name for himself with insightful articles on the dynamic magazine industry in his Media Inc. column, was honored with induction into the Deadline Club New York Journalism Hall of Fame on Thursday at the Harvard Club in New York City.
Kelly dedicated 23 years to the Post, detailing the highs and lows of the magazine landscape, including the influential designers at its helm. Former Post publisher Jesse Angelo highlighted Kelly’s significant influence within the Condé Nast empire during the induction ceremony.
Angelo recounted observing Kelly’s interactions with top Condé Nast editors, noting that Kelly had a unique way of commanding attention. He would often call, saying, “Well, Keith Kelly is here, are you available?” It became somewhat of a joke between him and Kelly how quickly those high-profile editors would call back—usually within five minutes.
Tina Brown, a distinguished editor herself, shared her experiences, admitting to an initial trepidation regarding Kelly’s calls. Yet, she felt compelled to answer, recognizing he always had the inside scoop on Condé Nast’s happenings. There was a genuine sense of urgency; after all, it was important to know if there were any changes affecting her position or her staff.
Kelly, who moved on from the Post in 2021 only to return a year later as editor-in-chief for several Strauss Media-owned local New York papers, reflected on his reporting days, saying it was one of the most fulfilling experiences he had. As for the future—a new mayor is at the helm—he expressed excitement about covering the evolving city.
“It’s going to be challenging in New York,” Kelly remarked. “We’re in for a lot of fun, and I’m eager to be part of it every step of the way.”
Other inductees included Bill Whitaker from 60 Minutes, Martha Teichner from CBS Sunday Morning, WNBC anchor Chuck Scarborough, and Rich Lamb from WCBS News Radio.
