Joy Reid Critiques GOP’s Stance on Obamacare During Shutdown

Former MSNBC host Joy Reid has taken a strong stance on the ongoing debate surrounding the Republican opposition to the Democrats’ efforts to expand Obamacare subsidies amidst the current government shutdown. She controversially referred to the term “illegal” as a “new n-word,” suggesting it carries a deeply racist connotation.

Reid stated, “Republicans want to exploit the underlying animosity many have towards undocumented immigrants to undermine Obamacare for everyone. What they’ve done is morph the term ‘illicitors’ into a new N-word.”

Previously, she hosted “The Reidout” on MSNBC before its cancellation this year. In a later podcast discussion, Reid pointed out how the Republicans tend to label everything as “illegal.”

She expressed concern that rural hospitals could be at risk of closing due to the situation, accusing Republicans of intentionally causing these shutdowns. “They shut those hospitals down and then turn around and blame you. It’s like they have a new language for everything. If you stub your toe, they’ll say it’s illegal,” Reid remarked.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and most Democrats have made it clear that they won’t agree to government funding unless Congress decides to extend the expired Obamacare grants. Senate Majority Leader John Tune from the Republican side would need the support of at least eight Democrats to proceed with the GOP bill, which may keep the government running only until November 21st.

GOP Claims on Healthcare for Undocumented Immigrants

The Republican party has pointed to the Democrats’ proposed solutions as evidence that they are advocating for healthcare for undocumented immigrants. Plans from Democrats involve repealing certain healthcare changes introduced under what they call the GOP’s “one big beautiful bill.”

Reid has also recently made provocative claims regarding the conservative agenda. In a separate interview, she argued that some conservatives wish to regress society to earlier centuries, hinting at a desire for a “hierarchical past” that favors white men at the top. She warned that this push isn’t just about racial hierarchies but also about rolling back business regulations.

“One motive behind their seriousness is that if they could revert to the era before the 20th century, there would be no income tax,” Reid asserted. “Without business regulations, one could amass wealth freely and pass it on to their children without tax implications. That’s the kind of world they’re after.”
