James’ National Anthem Behavior Sparks Debate
LeBron James, a key player for the Philadelphia 76ers, has attracted quite a bit of attention this season for his tendency to sway and seemingly practice his golf swing during the national anthem. This has even caught the eye of the President of the United States.
Now, a former NBA player has voiced his opinion about it, and his views aren’t particularly flattering. Jason Williams, who played as a point guard for 12 seasons across teams like the Grizzlies, Kings, Heat, and Magic, shared his thoughts on the matter during a recent episode of the “Hoopin’ N Hollerin'” podcast, which he co-hosts with Adam Ferrone.
Williams didn’t hold back when asked for his take. “I do,” he affirmed, adding, “I think motherf—ers should just stand the f— still during the national anthem. That’s just my opinion.”
It’s a pretty straightforward opinion, I guess.
On one hand, Williams stated that he personally didn’t care much about what LeBron was doing, yet he reiterated his desire for James to remain still during the anthem. “You’re supposed to stand still!” he emphasized. He went on to mention the uniformity of the players’ attire, suggesting that perhaps someone like LeBron might face repercussions, saying, “I guarantee he got fined because you’re all supposed to be dressed the same. You’re supposed to be standing still. When I played, that was the rule. They could’ve changed it now, but I guarantee he got fined.”
It’s worth noting that the NBA hasn’t issued any fines addressing James’ warm-up routine during the anthem. Yet, the criticisms aren’t solely from Williams or former President Trump. Legendary player Charles Barkley, who co-hosts “Inside the NBA,” has also made remarks about James not adhering to the tradition of standing still during the national anthem.
