Former NFL safety Tyrann Mathieu opened up about his attempts to pass drug tests during his time at LSU, revealing he resorted to some extreme measures, including using a “fake penis” and even mixing Coca-Cola with bleach.
In a podcast episode titled “On the bayou,” Mathieu shared that he became quite ill after trying the bizarre concoction he found while browsing online. “I did everything to pass, even used someone else’s urine and got a fake penis. It’s kind of funny, but honestly, it’s not because it could have killed me,” he remarked about his college days.
He reflected, “After some tests, I realized they were going to expel me… I was frantically searching on Google for ways to beat this test.” He felt pressured, recalling, “They kept blackmailing me.” Then, he came across the suggestion of mixing bleach with Coca-Cola, which he decided to try. “My body felt like it was going to burst… I had to throw away that idea. Suddenly, I thought, ‘Man, I’m out of options here.'”
He admitted, “I thought it would help, but it totally backfired.”
Mathieu chose not to disclose which substances he was trying to hide with that dangerous mix.
As a Heisman Trophy finalist in 2011, Mathieu played at LSU from 2010 to 2011. Unfortunately, he was dismissed from the team for violating rules just a week into his junior preseason training camp in 2012.
In October 2012, he and two former teammates faced drug-related arrests, an event that led him into rehab to tackle substance abuse before entering the NFL Draft in 2013.
During his college career, Mathieu played in 26 games, starting 14, and was responsible for 14 turnovers while scoring four touchdowns. He holds the LSU record for forced fumbles at 11, surpassing the previous benchmark by four.
He was selected in the third round, 69th overall, by the Arizona Cardinals. Over 12 seasons in the NFL, Mathieu made three Pro Bowl appearances and celebrated a Super Bowl victory with the Kansas City Chiefs after the 2019 season. He announced his retirement from the NFL in July of last year.
