Murder Trial of Former Massachusetts Police Officer Begins
The trial for a former police officer from Massachusetts, who is charged with murdering his pregnant mistress and making it appear as a suicide, is set to begin. This came after a brief hearing at 9 a.m. on Friday, where the focus will soon shift to opening statements once the jury is seated.
Matthew Farwell, who served as a police officer in Stoughton, is facing trial for the death of Sandra Birchmore, who was just 23 when she died three years prior. The FBI arrested Farwell in August 2024 in connection with her death.
Details of the Case
Prosecutors allege that Farwell, now 40, groomed Birchmore when she was a teenager, maintaining a sexual relationship over several years. The situation escalated when Birchmore informed Farwell of her pregnancy, at which point he allegedly took lethal action and attempted to stage her death to look like a suicide.
Initially, Birchmore’s death was ruled a suicide, but further investigations led to charges against Farwell. According to federal prosecutors, he killed Birchmore to silence her after she announced she was keeping the baby. They claim he expressed disdain by telling her she was “the worst person on the face of the earth.”
While DNA testing cleared Farwell of being the unborn child’s father, it is claimed that he thought he was based on text messages exchanged between the pair shortly before her death.
Birchmore seemed to be enthusiastic about her pregnancy and kept Farwell updated with news about doctor appointments, ultrasound tests, and even a planned gender reveal. Tragically, she was between eight to ten weeks pregnant when she died just two weeks before Valentine’s Day, when she had intended to announce her pregnancy.
Background of the Relationship
Birchmore joined the police department’s explorers program at just 12 years old, while Farwell, who volunteered with the program, allegedly exploited this connection. After she turned 15, he is accused of grooming and abusing her, continuing the relationship into her adult years, sometimes even while he was on duty.
On February 1, 2021, it is believed that Farwell strangled Birchmore after she shared the pregnancy news. Throughout these events, he has maintained his innocence and has been in jail since his arrest in August 2024.
Stoughton is located approximately 20 miles south of Boston, and jury selection took place earlier this week as the community watches closely.
