Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) said on MSNBC’s “All In” on Tuesday that he and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) have a bill that would apply the ban on $50 gifts to Supreme Court justices.
“Senator Raskin and I, along with every other member of Congress, will be introducing legislation to apply the same $50 gift rule to the Supreme Court that Senator Raskin and I are subject to,” Ocasio-Cortez said in a statement.
“Congress has a ban on outside employment and, as AOC said, there’s also a $50 gift ban, so nobody goes near that,” Raskin said.
“Under what circumstances would a Supreme Court justice be accepting hundreds of thousands, even millions, of dollars for international travel, tuition fees for their families, or camper vans?” he added.
Raskin added, “This is outrageous to us. It’s commonplace on the Supreme Court to collect millions and hundreds of thousands of dollars from so-called friends. We need to clean this up. We said we’d start with something simple that the whole country could immediately and intuitively understand. We’re asking for a $50 gift ban. These are people who make $300,000 a year, they pay for their own lunches, they pay for their own vacations.”
