Tragedy in Athens: Four Americans Among Six Dead in Building Explosion

Six people, including four American tourists, lost their lives in a devastating explosion that destroyed a small residential building in Athens on Saturday. The building, located near the Acropolis in the popular tourist area of Plaka, collapsed early Friday morning, officials reported.

The blast is believed to have been caused by a gas leak, according to Haris Doukas, the mayor of Athens. It wreaked havoc not only on the building but also damaged vehicles and properties nearby.

Along with the American family, which was renting an apartment on the ground floor, an elderly British man and his Greek wife, residents of the second floor, also died, as stated by Greece’s state broadcaster ERT.

The American family was on the verge of heading to the airport to return to the United States when the explosion occurred, as reported by Kathimerini. The family consisted of a couple, their son, and his girlfriend.

Authorities have yet to release details regarding the identities or ages of the deceased Americans or their hometown in the United States.

On the scene, reporters observed heavy machinery clearing debris and the use of thermal imaging cameras to search for any potential survivors. Mayor Doukas described the situation as an “incredible disaster,” expressing deep concern over the condition of two nearby buildings which now face inspection to determine their safety.

Mathaios Artavanis, the owner of the ground-floor apartment, mentioned that he was away during the incident. He had tried to contact the couple who lived above him but could not reach them. Interestingly, a year prior, residents of the Plaka neighborhood had raised alarms about the possibility of gas leaks and urged city officials to conduct fire drills to assess emergency responses.

A local citizens’ group noted that someone had even reported a potential gas leak to authorities just before the explosion, highlighting ongoing safety concerns in the area.

Plaka is renowned as one of Athens’s prime tourist spots, with the nearby Acropolis attracting millions of visitors each year.
