Tragic Explosion in Greece Claims Lives of Four American Tourists

Officials reported that a tragic explosion in Greece resulted in the deaths of six people, including four American tourists, near Athens’ renowned Acropolis. The incident occurred in a two-story building located in the historic Plaka district, close to many popular landmarks, as the blast hit on Friday.

The four Americans, identified as two couples, were reportedly scheduled to catch a flight from Athens airport at 3 p.m. on the same day but failed to arrive, according to a police source. Documentation found with the victims suggested they were U.S. citizens, as noted by various local media outlets.

The U.S. Ambassador to Greece, Kimberly Guilfoyle, expressed her sorrow over the incident in a post on social media. She wrote, “I am deeply saddened to learn of the death of four American citizens in yesterday’s explosion in central Athens.”

Emergency crews undertook a search through the debris and found six bodies amongst the rubble of the collapsed building the following day. Firefighter spokesman Vassilis Vathrakogiannis explained that crews were initially searching for an elderly couple who lived in one of the apartments and the four tourists who were in another.

Authorities suggested that a significant gas leak was the likely cause of the explosion. This was confirmed by Athens Mayor Haris Doukas, who noted that there had been reports of a gas smell in the area leading up to the blast.

The powerful explosion completely destroyed the building and caused damage to surrounding homes, businesses, and vehicles, sending debris scattered across several blocks. Footage from the scene revealed damaged cars and rubble strewn in the street, while the remnants of the building were reduced to twisted metal and concrete, with personal items scattered throughout.

The search-and-rescue operation involved around 30 firefighters and three rescue dogs, alongside additional equipment like cameras and sensors to help navigate the debris. Reports indicated that two women in a nearby building were injured, while local resident Andreas Martzaklis mentioned that the individuals rescued from there were tourists.

Additionally, a nearby church was affected, with the pastor announcing that Sunday services would be held outdoors due to the damage sustained from the explosion.
