Flooding in Arizona Claims Four Lives

In Arizona, heavy rainfall has resulted in flooding that has tragically taken the lives of four individuals, prompting some residents in rural areas to seek refuge on their rooftops, according to officials.

Three of the deceased were found in a town with a population of about 7,250, located approximately 88 miles east of Phoenix, as reported by Gila County Emergency Manager Carl Melford. Two victims were discovered inside a vehicle, while another was located in the floodwaters; their identities have not yet been released.

In Phoenix’s suburbs, the body of another individual was recovered near a vehicle that was found partially submerged in about eight feet of water. The Scottsdale Fire Department indicated the vehicle had appeared empty the previous evening, and after the water receded overnight, rescue crews located the body pinned under a road bridge.

Authorities in Grove, one of the state’s oldest mining towns, are considering reporting potentially missing individuals, though Melford was unable to confirm any specific numbers.

“We are now on a massive search and rescue mission,” he said.

Rainfall on Friday quickly inundated the downtown area, with one of the first affected sites being a propane tank distributor, which scattered around 1,000 home-sized tanks throughout the community.

“There are propane tanks everywhere in downtown Grove,” Melford noted, adding that hazardous materials teams have been deployed. “Fortunately, none of them ignited or exploded.”

This area had previously dealt with flooding following wildfires in 2021, but Melford emphasized that this situation was distinct. “This was a very short period of rain,” he remarked.

Officials are advising residents against searching for flood victims, as rescue teams, equipped with search dogs, may inadvertently attract attention from potential victims. If individuals want to help, Melford suggests they focus on assisting friends and neighbors in need.

The Grove City Council has declared a state of emergency, highlighting the unprecedented nature of this flooding. Mayor Al Gamero mentioned that many volunteers have come forward, but noted that numerous buildings in the downtown area have suffered damage. Authorities have urged residents to stay clear of the site until it is deemed safe again.

“Our primary focus is still on search and rescue,” Gamero stated on Saturday.
