Fox Sports commentators discuss Mark Sanchez stabbing and arrest during NFL broadcasts

The Fox Sports NFL team briefly discussed the recent stabbing incident involving their colleague Mark Sanchez during their broadcast on Sunday.

Charissa Thompson, host of “Fox NFL Kickoff,” expressed during the morning segment, “We’re still trying to wrap our heads around what happened to Mark Sanchez on Friday night.” Her sentiments were echoed later by Curt Menefee, host of “Fox NFL Sunday,” who reiterated that “We’re all trying to understand this.”

Sanchez, aged 38, had a late-night altercation outside a bar in Indianapolis, where he was scheduled to commentate on the Colts vs. Raiders game. He was reportedly stabbed in the chest during a dispute with a 69-year-old man, claiming that he acted in self-defense. Reports state that Sanchez may have been perceived as the aggressor in the situation.

Witnesses noted that Sanchez was acting “irregularly” prior to the incident, with one source commenting, “We’ll do wind sprints in alleys before any stabs happen,” suggesting it was an unexpected turn of events. Following the altercation, he was hospitalized and charged with misdemeanor battery causing injury, public intoxication, and illegal motor vehicle entry.

As of Saturday evening, Sanchez remained in the hospital. He began his NFL career as the fifth overall pick by the Jets in 2009, playing there for five seasons, with his last season in Washington in 2018. He later joined Fox Sports in July 2021 as a game analyst.

In the wake of this incident, former Browns quarterback Brady Quinn has stepped in to replace Sanchez for the Sunday broadcast. Additionally, Sanchez has been married to actress Perry Mattfeld since 2023.
