Franklin Graham Defends Trump Amid Controversy
Rev. Franklin Graham issued a statement defending President Donald Trump on Truth Social, addressing criticism regarding an image some accused of depicting Trump as Jesus Christ. The statement was shared by Trump on Thursday.
In his comments, Graham asserted, “I don’t believe President Trump would intentionally portray himself as Jesus Christ. That would definitely be inappropriate.” Trump, for his part, suggested that the image illustrated “a doctor helping someone” and noted that he deleted the post shortly after concerns were raised.
Graham emphasized that the image lacked any spiritual elements, saying, “There were no halos, no crosses, no angels.” He described it instead as featuring a flag, a soldier, a nurse, a fighter jet, and an eagle, arguing that this was overblown criticism.
He also referred to another image of Trump that was shared on the platform, indicating that it showed Jesus offering guidance. Graham remarked, “We all need to listen to the words of Jesus,” suggesting the illustration was meant to be a representation of guidance rather than self-portrayal.
A representative for Graham stated that he would not be making any further comments but would appear on “Hannity” later that evening.
The situation escalated when Trump posted an AI-generated image that appeared to depict him healing a man amidst a patriotic backdrop, receiving backlash from various political figures, including some within his own supporter base.
The following day, Trump addressed the uproar, claiming, “I posted it and I thought it was me, the doctor. … Only fake news could come up with something like that.” He later deleted the post.
Despite Graham’s defense, some critics, including conservative commentators, voiced their disapproval. Riley Gaines pointed out the problematic nature of the post, with others describing it as “blasphemy” and urging an apology from Trump. Yet, some defended the post as being symbolic.
Graham acknowledged Trump’s contributions to religious freedom and expressed hope for a future meeting between Trump and Pope Leo, remarking, “I hope that the president and Pope Leo will meet someday and that the pope will have the opportunity to thank President Trump for his efforts to protect religious freedom.”
The White House has not yet responded to requests for comment regarding the controversy.
