Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner referred to police as 'opportunistic cowards'

Graham Platner Withdraws from Senate Race, Community Reacts

Graham Platner, who previously ran for Senate in Maine, has pulled out of the race following serious allegations of rape that have ignited discussions in the political arena. He attributes his withdrawal to the media’s coverage and the political landscape, while critics, including Senator John Fetterman from Pennsylvania, have condemned his self-focused videos. In the wake of this situation, Democrats are hurrying to select a new candidate by July 27, with Troy Jackson being a notable potential contender.

On Friday, Platner shared a letter announcing his decision, publicly thanking his supporters. He concluded with a bold statement: “Fuck ICE. Liberate Palestine. Lift up your hearts.”

The letter, submitted to Maine’s Secretary of State’s Office of Elections, included his formal withdrawal from the Senate candidacy. “I’m officially writing to the United States Senate to withdraw my candidacy,” Platner stated.

In it, he recognized the 156,084 Mainers who cast their votes for him in the recent Democratic primary, asserting his commitment to a political agenda prioritizing universal healthcare and labor union support.

“My name may be on the ballot, but that voting line belongs to the people of Maine,” he added, urging consideration of his formal withdrawal from the race.

Platner’s resignation followed his announcement two days prior about suspending his campaign amid increasing scrutiny due to several concerning allegations, which he has continuously denied.

The progressive Democrat, who received support from Senator Bernie Sanders last September, faced off against Republican Senator Susan Collins in what was anticipated to be a highly competitive campaign. This race is crucial as it could impact the Republican majority in the upcoming midterm elections.

Following the rise of controversy, Platner disclosed in a social media video that further action would halt his campaign’s progress. “For us to proceed, I cannot take any actions, so we are suspending our campaign,” he indicated.

His campaign’s end comes just a month after he celebrated a decisive victory in Maine’s Democratic Senate primary on June 9, just days after serious allegations emerged, including a rape accusation from a former girlfriend.

Jenny Racicot, who resides in Maine, described the encounter as rape, stating Platner coerced her against her will five years prior—a claim he staunchly rejects.

Moreover, a second allegation surfaced last week, suggesting that Platner removed a condom during an intimate encounter with his ex-girlfriend, Lindsay Fifield, despite her explicit instructions to use one. Fifield had previously claimed physical misconduct during their relationship, asserting that he often held her firmly enough to leave marks.

In response to Fifield’s statements, Platner’s team labeled them as “categorically false and politically motivated,” drawing attention to her ties with the conservative Heritage Foundation.

Last week, Platner addressed these allegations in a video, expressing visible anger and denying their authenticity: “This is all false. None of the things being alleged happened. It’s not true.”

The Marine veteran has been regarded as the prominent candidate in the spring after other potential candidates withdrew from consideration due to lagging fundraising and poll numbers. However, turmoil arrived shortly thereafter amidst multiple controversies challenging the integrity of his campaign.

The issues ranged from past inflammatory comments on a deleted Reddit account to the discovery of a tattoo resembling a Nazi symbol. To add to that, he faced scrutiny from allegations regarding explicit communications with several women during his marriage, alongside claims tied to unsettling fantasies about violence.

Platner has consistently maintained that accusations related to violence are false. The unfolding situation has not only attracted widespread attention but also raised doubts among some Democratic figures about his viability in the race.

Despite the allegations, Platner managed to secure the Democratic nomination, thriving on a populist message that resonated with voters.

In his victory speech last month, he emphasized personal growth and transformation: “If you believe, as I do, that we can change politics and our country, you must believe that people can change, too.” He highlighted his lived experiences as proof.

As more allegations surfaced recently, numerous prominent Democrats, including establishment leaders and progressive allies, called for his exit from the race. The Maine Democratic Party announced efforts to identify a new candidate swiftly.

In light of the recent developments, various Democrats have entered the race to succeed Platner, including former gubernatorial candidates Nirav Shah and Shena Bellows, among others.

The process of selecting a new Senate candidate will take place at a nominating convention, involving around 600 delegates. Platner expressed concern over the necessity of the people’s voice in this process, stressing, “What comes next has to come from the people of Maine. They voted for politics that truly represents them.”

He warned that if he attempted to continue his campaign, it would limit his capacity to raise funds and obtain valuable voter insights needed for success. “Those in power are utilizing these allegations as a pretext to strip us of our campaign resources,” he asserted.

Senator Collins, the moderate Republican currently running for a sixth term, could play a critical role in the dynamics of Democratic efforts to reclaim a Senate seat pivotal in the balance of power.
