A man died Monday after being buried alive while working on a septic system on Long Island, New York, police said.
The Suffolk County Sheriff's Office said in a press release that laborer Lauro Pacheco, 38, of Bay Shore, was charged with sewage to a Head of the Harbor home just before 2:30 p.m. when the incident occurred. I was just installing a reservoir ring. Head of the Harbor is a village in Suffolk County located on the North Shore of Long Island.
According to police, the victim went into the hole to flatten the ring of the cesspit and the excavated soil fell down, burying him alive.

Emergency services from several towns tried to dig out the worker, but they were unable to reach him in time.
Police said the man was finally pulled out of the hole by emergency department personnel about five hours later and pronounced dead.

Police said Pacheco and a Darius Masonry employee were installing a sump ring at their home at 1 Piper Lane when the tragedy occurred.
According to PIX11, Port Police Chief Chuck Roman said officers were helping install a septic tank near the carriage house on the property.
According to the Suffolk County Sheriff's Office, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) was notified.
