Freddie Prinze Jr. reveals the secret to a lasting marriage with Sarah Michelle Gellar

Freddie Prinze Jr. Shares Secrets of Lasting Marriage with Sarah Michelle Gellar

Freddie Prinze Jr. recently reflected on his 23-year marriage to actress Sarah Michelle Gellar in a candid interview. At 49 years old, Prinze Jr. has been sharing insights about their enduring relationship, especially within the challenging landscape of Hollywood.

He acknowledges that, “Whatever business you’re in, marriage is tough.” For him, Gellar is everything, though he admits a successful formula for one couple might not apply to another. They put in the effort. “Neither of us is perfect,” he said. “Sure, we get on each other’s nerves sometimes, but we respect each other deeply. We started as friends, which helped.”

Prinze Jr. humorously wondered if their mutual attraction was a secret to their connection, saying, “Yeah, she’s hot, he’s hot—let’s hook up.” They first crossed paths while filming “I Know What You Did Last Summer” in 1997, but it wasn’t love at first sight. He recalled, in a 2001 interview, that they “didn’t really dig each other” at the start. However, a chance meeting at the gym changed that perception. “I found her really down-to-earth,” he said.

While they became friends quickly, romance blossomed three years later. Gellar and Prinze Jr. shared a story about how their first date happened almost by accident. They had planned to meet with others who couldn’t make it, ending up alone together, which led to a meaningful conversation. Prinze Jr. soon realized he had no interest in dating anyone else after that evening.

They got engaged in 2001 and married a year later in Mexico, with Gellar being 24 and Prinze Jr. 26 at the time. Their first child, Charlotte Grace, arrived in 2009. Speaking about family life, Prinze Jr. expressed how much he enjoys being with his kids. “I hate when my daughter leaves for summer. Wandering around with my son is a blast,” he said. “And let’s not forget, I married my wife for a reason.”

In a December 2024 interview, Gellar emphasized the importance of putting effort into any relationship. She noted how modern society often leans toward disposability. “We live in a very throwaway culture,” she explained, hinting that many people apply the same attitude to personal relationships as they do to material things. She lightheartedly added, “Maybe it’s just different bathrooms?”

Currently, Prinze Jr. is reprising his role in the sequel to “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” which was released on June 18. Interestingly, co-star Jennifer Love Hewitt is back as well, closely linking their stories apart from their shared history in the original films. Gellar, whose character met an untimely end in the first movie, even made a brief comeback in a dream sequence.
