How this ends: Smiles and handshakes on the White House lawn on a warm spring day.
The national anthem was performed by the cute South African soprano Yende. His call echoes along the column as the Xhosa hymn singer enters from Colonnade and the two presidents walk slowly behind him.
President Donald Trump allows his guests to take his lead, and the two leaders prepare to take their place on the podium and celebrate the signing of a new bilateral treaty.
The terms of the treaty are loosely in line with Trump's demands. In exchange for favorable terms of trade from the US, South Africa has agreed to abolish the expropriation laws that have caused the current diplomatic crisis. I also agree to create a “free zone” near Cape Town and Johannesburg.
There, foreign companies are exempt from South Africa's strict labor laws and so-called “black economic empowerment” rules.
Under the new agreement, members of South Africa's elite will enjoy a year of pardon to repatriate illegal funds hidden in foreign bank accounts. The US then demands that financial institutions freeze and seize the money.
South Africa also commits to protecting the safety of farmers and women from all backgrounds, subject to annual monitoring and reporting.
The South African government has agreed to end military exercises with China and Russia and end all cooperation with the Iranian regime. He also agrees to end a slanderous case against Israel in the International Court of Justice.
In return, the US will not only renew Africa's growth and opportunity laws and South Africa's membership, but will also host the Olympics in favor of South Africa's bids, invest in infrastructure and billions in private funds. I also agree to commit.
All this is possible. But South African leaders must learn another way to attract Trump.
Here are some tips.
1. Meetings alone will not solve this. South Africa plans to send at least three delegations to the United States to smooth things out. But there are few civil servants who can or can meet them.
President Trump won't. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who has already boycotted the South African conference, will not. And Democrats are blocking the confirmation of other officials who may be prone to talking. In fact, even Democrats want The US punishes South Africa for being with Russia against Ukraine.
Please publicly commit to making changes before meeting.
2. Stop treating President Trump and Republicans with light emptying. The South African government and the media have long demonized Trump and the Republican Party, and they can't understand anything about what's happening in America.
President Cyril Ramaphosa I insisted Trump was spreading “misinformation.” Even former president Tabo Mbeki I said He was baffled by the “overnight” “dramatic change” of the Republican Party. Popular manga artist Jonathan Shapiro (Zapirou) It was drawn Trump and Elon Musk as Nazis.
That doesn't help.
3. Mineral wealth is no longer a trump card. South Africa seems to believe that the world needs gold, platinum and rare earth minerals, so it can escape with all sorts of actions.
Trump's executive order reveals that South Africa's most valuable resources are in fact their people and are easier to extract.
Better life in South Africa, you become a much stronger country domestically and internationally.
