Freedom 250 Grand Prix Begins in Washington, D.C.

The Freedom 250 Grand Prix has officially started in Washington, D.C., marking a unique event as the first IndyCar Series race held at the National Mall.

The Grand Prix kicked off on Saturday, following practice sessions and qualifying heats the day prior. IndyCar drivers raced through the streets at impressive speeds, reaching nearly 200 mph, celebrating the 250th anniversary of America.

President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were present for this notable occasion, with the president’s motorcade taking a ceremonial lap around the track to begin Sunday’s events.

“President Trump is ensuring America gets the spectacular birthday it deserves as we celebrate our 250th anniversary,” a White House spokesman remarked.

He further added, “The historic IndyCar race taking place in our Nation’s Capital will be one of the greatest and most iconic races in history. The President will leave his imprint on this historic race in a way that only he can.”

This year’s Indianapolis 500 winner, Felix Rosenqvist, is among the competitors, racing against a backdrop of the most recognizable landmarks in the U.S., like the Washington Monument and the U.S. Capitol.

The 1.7-mile circuit for the Freedom 250 Grand Prix winds around the National Mall, featuring seven turns and passing through various significant areas in D.C. Starting down a lengthy 0.4-mile stretch along Pennsylvania Avenue, the racers zoom past landmarks such as the National Archives and the National Gallery of Art.

After looping around the U.S. Capitol, the course continues along Independence Avenue before drivers make their way back to the finish line, completing the route through the center of the nation’s capital.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy was instrumental in organizing the race.

“What’s more American than fast cars racing through the streets of our nation’s capital? If that doesn’t make you proud to be an American, I don’t know what will,” Duffy expressed. “The Department of Transportation was proud to help turn President Trump’s one-of-a-kind vision into reality this weekend for an unforgettable celebration of America’s talents, innovation, and commitment to excellence. At 250 years, freedom doesn’t just ring — it revs!”

As part of the celebrations, the New York Stock Exchange also participated by ringing its opening bell at the Grand Prix track on Friday, commemorating the 250th anniversary of American independence.
