Happiest Places to Live in America

For Americans searching for a more joyful place to settle down, it might be worth considering cities that aren’t the big, well-known ones. A recent WalletHub study looked at over 180 of the largest cities in the U.S., revealing that happiness often hinges on factors beyond just salary, like mental health, physical well-being, and community support.

Surprisingly, the top spots weren’t taken by major cities such as New York or Los Angeles. Instead, smaller and mid-sized cities stood out in the rankings. By 2026, it’s expected that more people will be leaving large urban areas for rural settings.

Fremont, California, emerged as the happiest city in America, followed closely by Bismarck, North Dakota; Scottsdale, Arizona; South Burlington, Vermont; and Fargo, North Dakota.

Completing the top ten list are Overland Park, Kansas; Charleston, South Carolina; Irvine, California; Gilbert, Arizona; and San Jose, California.

This pattern suggests that simply having a high income in metropolitan areas doesn’t automatically equate to happiness. In fact, it seems that quality of life plays a much bigger role.

“Research indicates that more money only boosts happiness up to a point—roughly $75,000 a year. Beyond that, it doesn’t seem to make any difference,” Chip Lupo, a WalletHub analyst, shared. “So, when choosing where to live for happiness, it’s essential to consider more than just average income.”

The cities that ranked the highest excelled in mental and physical health, job satisfaction, and strong community connections. Fremont particularly shone, taking the lead for both mental and physical well-being and ranking fourth in community environment.

The city also boasts low separation and divorce rates, minimal depression levels, and high life expectancy, according to the study.

Interestingly, nearly 80% of Fremont’s households earn above $75,000 per year, a pivotal factor tied to happiness. WalletHub also ranks Fremont as the fifth most caring city in America.

These findings underline the elements that differentiate the happiest cities from others. “The ideal city is one that nurtures good mental and physical health through reasonable working hours, short commutes, pleasant weather, and supportive neighbors,” Lupo noted.
