There’s been a concerning listeria outbreak linked to certain frozen meals. According to the CDC, products sold at Trader Joe’s and Walmart have resulted in four fatalities and 19 hospitalizations. Recently, a multi-state recall was announced for pre-packaged meals containing pasta that might be tainted with listeria.
The recall includes the “Market Side Ring-In with Beef Meatballs and Marinara Sauce” available in a 12-ounce tray at Walmart, which was initially issued in June. Additionally, “Trader Joe’s Cajun Style Blackened Chicken Breast Fettuccine Alfredo” is also part of this recall.
On Fridays, the CDC updated its report indicating that the listeria outbreak has led to 20 cases across 15 states, including the aforementioned hospitalizations and deaths. They advise that recalled items should not be on store shelves anymore and should be thrown away or returned if purchased.
People shouldn’t consume any recalled foods and are encouraged to clean their refrigerators, containers, and surfaces that might have come into contact with the contaminated products, as listeria can survive in cold conditions.
As for the severity of listeria, it primarily affects vulnerable populations, namely pregnant women, individuals over 65, or those with weakened immune systems, potentially leading to serious health issues.
The CDC recommends that anyone who suspects exposure should reach out to a healthcare provider if they experience symptoms like headaches, neck stiffness, confusion, loss of balance, cramps, fever, muscle aches, or fatigue.
In other news, Kraft Heinz has recalled over 367,000 pounds of Oscar Mayer turkey bacon due to similar listeria concerns. The outbreak has been noted for causing severe health implications, including four deaths and numerous hospitalizations.
Pregnant women, in particular, should be vigilant and contact their healthcare providers if they face symptoms like fever or muscle pain. Even mild cases of listeria can significantly harm newborns and lead to pregnancy complications.
While symptoms can emerge as quickly as the same day or as long as ten weeks after consuming contaminated food, caution is clearly advised.
