Trenine Critiques Democratic Party at DNC Meeting
Former Democratic strategist Dan Trenine criticized his party on Monday, right after the opening of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) summer meeting.
Among the first items on the DNC agenda was a “land recognition” issue, which addressed the claim that Minnesota land was taken from Indigenous peoples. Trenine expressed his views on “Ingraham’s Angle,” stating that Democrats are making the same errors repeatedly and are trapped in their current situation.
“Laura, you mentioned that this is the definition of insanity. You keep doing the same thing over and over again,” Trenine told host Laura Ingraham. “We haven’t lost 4.5 million voters, nor is our brand at a historic low because we haven’t tried hard enough. It’s because we’re completely culturally isolated and lack any clear agenda.”
He continued, addressing Trump’s approach: “You noted, [President Donald] Trump is attempting to solve the issues. We focus on the process too much: ‘Oh, he shouldn’t do that; he’s breaking norms.’ Or, we think it’s the media’s job to handle that. And on cultural topics, it seems like we’re dictating what words can’t be spoken. When you add all of this up, we’re not in a good place.”
Many Democrats, including DNC Chairman Ken Martin and former vice presidential candidate Tim Waltz, were outraged by Trump’s comments on authoritarianism during the meeting.
“Democrats, there’s definitely a storm brewing. In fact, it’s already here,” Martin stated. “We’re seeing increases in inequality, attacks on democracy, voter suppression, and authoritarian regimes ignoring the rules.”
Martin emphasized the ease of joining the Republican ranks, sarcastically noting, “What should I wear today? That silly red hat. What should I say? ‘Who will I listen to? [President Donald Trump]. A White House felon? Sure, let’s do that.'” He added about Trump’s talks of flag burning, suggesting it was all part of a strategy to provoke reactions.
A memo from the Third Way liberal think tank advised Democrats to steer clear of “woke” language. This document highlighted 45 terms and phrases that should be avoided, arguing that some can come across as “extreme, divisive, elitist, and difficult to understand for the average person.”
A CNN poll conducted in March showed that Democratic approval ratings had hit a record low of 29%. By July, a Quinnipiac survey found only 19% approval for the party’s leadership—also a record low. Additionally, the party faces internal strife, difficulties in meeting fundraising targets, and a notable drop in voter registration.
