FTC seeks public’s input on ‘un-American’ and ‘potentially illegal’ Big Tech censorship — including ‘shadow banning’

The Federal Trade Commission is putting large companies, such as Google and Facebook's parent meta under the microscope over potential censorship of users and seeking public opinion, the agency announced Thursday.

The FTC, led by President Trump's newly appointed Chairman Andrew Ferguson, has invited him to submit comments to the agency's website by May 21st.

“Tech companies should not bully users,” Ferguson said in a statement. “This investigation will help the FTC better understand how these companies violated the law by silence and intimidating Americans to speak their minds.”

Among the concerns flagged by Ferguson is the “shadow vanning” practice, which states that “companies can implement disruptive or unpredictable internal procedures that cut off users.”

Users of other tech platforms facing social media apps and shadow bans, or who have demonstrated or censored their accounts, are “encouraged to share comments” in FTC requests.

“Chair Ferguson has opened a black box, a high-tech censorship regime, allowing ordinary Americans to speak out and share their experiences,” he said.

“We hope this will shed light on the unfair and non-American practices of some of these internet gatekeepers,” added Leamer.

The FTC action comes as a major technology executive, including meta boss Mark Zuckerberg, Amazon's Jeff Bezos and Apple's Tim Cook.

The tech billionaire and several others have met with Trump personally since winning his election.

Many major companies, including Meta, have cut internal DEI programs in lockstep in a similar move by the Trump administration within the federal government. Zuckerberg has also put an end to Meta's fact-checking efforts.

The agency's announcement did not mention the company by name, but it “widely covers companies offering social media, video sharing, photo sharing, ride comfort, event planning, internal or external communications, or other internet services. It was pointed out.

The FTC move shows that large tech companies face intense scrutiny on Ferguson's watches, added Evan Swarztrauber, former FCC policy advisor and principal of CorePoint Strategies.

“These companies have a massive power in information ecosystems. What people are seeing, what people aren't seeing, who are not listening, who are not listening,” Swartztrauber said. . “Given the market power of major high-tech companies, it is only suitable for FTCs to invite the public to do things as important as online free expression.”

The fascinating attacks by Tech Titans have marked a major shift in the industry-Trump relationship. He previously accused Google and Meta of election interference and censorship several times.

Zuckerberg acknowledged that Meta is facing pressure from the Biden administration to censorship from online posts related to Covid-19 Pandemic.

Trump said when Ferguson nominated for the top role in December, he has a “proven record of facing major technical censorship.”

Earlier that same month, then-FTC commissioner Ferguson called on agents to investigate “conspiracy” and biases of digital advertising agencies, and the “cartel” of ads that were found to have promoted censorship. said it needs to be disbanded.

He has said that he has been repealing the role of suppressing the flow of advertising dollars to outlets, which are considered a risk to “brand safety,” such as the now-defunct Global Alliance and News Guard for responsible media (GARM). He was critical of the group.

Ferguson suggests that such groups may be violating Sherman Antitrust Act.
