Trump Suggests Redirecting Obamacare Funds to Individuals Amid Shutdown
As the government shutdown continues, President Donald Trump has proposed that Republicans redirect funds from the Affordable Care Act (ACA) directly to individuals rather than to insurance companies.
“I am recommending to Senate Republicans that the Hundreds of Billions of Dollars currently being sent to money sucking Insurance Companies in order to save the bad Healthcare provided by ObamaCare, BE SENT DIRECTLY TO THE PEOPLE SO THAT THEY CAN PURCHASE THEIR OWN, MUCH BETTER, HEALTHCARE, and have money left over,” Trump shared in a post on Truth Social.
He further stated, “In other words, take from the BIG, BAD Insurance Companies, give it to the people, and terminate, per Dollar spent, the worst Healthcare anywhere in the World, ObamaCare.”
Senate Democrats, on the other hand, are advocating for an extension of the Obamacare subsidies that were established during former President Joe Biden’s administration. These subsidies are due to expire at the year’s end.
The Republicans have made repeated attempts—14 times—to pass a temporary funding bill aimed at reopening the government until late November, despite opposition from their Democratic counterparts. They have also indicated readiness to negotiate healthcare matters separately once government operations resume.
Trump’s comments arrived just before the Senate was scheduled to convene after rejecting a bill on Friday that would have continued compensation for numerous federal employees.
In his social media statement, Trump reiterated his call for Republican lawmakers to “terminate the filibuster,” which currently necessitates 60 votes for the budget bill to progress.
This ongoing shutdown, now in its 39th day, has set a new record, surpassing the previous 35-day funding lapse in 2019, marking the longest in U.S. history.
