A 13-year-old boy in Texas is counting his blessings after surviving a lightning strike while gaming in his bedroom. This incident occurred on a Tuesday in Cypress, and it certainly rattled him.
Vlad Skridin was deeply engrossed in his video games when the unexpected happened. “I was just sitting here, everything seemed fine,” he told reporters. “I wasn’t expecting anything to go wrong.”
Suddenly, he felt a jolt as lightning struck him in the abdomen, traveling through a metal piece on his desk that had been in contact with his skin. He recalled, “I really jumped down and started screaming.” It was, understandably, a terrifying moment for him.
“It was really crazy. Honestly, I thought I was going to die,” Vlad admitted. He added, “At that moment, I didn’t think I would make it. I still don’t understand how I survived.”
The family’s theory is that lightning hit a nearby tree, causing the electricity to surge into their home and strike Vlad. They’ve pieced it together as best they can, though it’s a mystery how it all unfolded.
In addition to the shock, a small fire ignited in the attic due to the electrical current from the strike, which investigators believe traveled through the wiring of the house.
Vlad’s father quickly called for help, and emergency services were swift to respond. Thankfully, the damage was minor, mostly just some holes in the walls.
Paramedics checked on Vlad and determined he was alright, sparing him a trip to the hospital. “I’m feeling okay, just a bit shocked and dizzy,” he remarked later that night, clarifying that his dizziness was more from the chaos than any injury.
Despite the frightening ordeal, Vlad emerged unscathed, albeit with a fresh perspective on life. “You never really know what’s coming,” he reflected. “You just have to treat everyone kindly. Life can change in an instant.” His thoughts linger on how unpredictable life can be.
Following the incident, Mark Herman, the Harris County Constable, issued precautions for families in the area as more storms were anticipated. His message was clear: during storms, it’s best to steer clear of corded electronics and any plumbing or wiring, as lightning has a way of traveling through these systems.
