A family in California experienced a shocking moment when they discovered the body of a stranger at their relative’s memorial service. This distressing incident reportedly caused one attendee to suffer a heart attack, according to family members.
Joey Espinosa, 44, recently passed away from heart failure, and during the memorial service at Forest Lawn Covina Hills Funeral Home, the family learned that the wrong body had been placed in the casket.
“They didn’t know where my nephew’s body was,” Laura Levario, Espinosa’s aunt, explained.
Following what appears to have been a mix-up, staff at the funeral home directed the grieving family to a different room, only to find that the body displayed there was still not Espinosa’s.
The situation escalated dramatically when Levario’s husband collapsed from a heart attack inside the chapel. He woke up three days later on life support at the hospital.
“This is the worst experience we’ve ever had,” he remarked.
Forest Lawn attributed this tragic blunder to a “scheduling error” and, to further compound the issue, offered the family a mere $200 in compensation—only about 1% of the nearly $20,000 funeral costs.
Currently, the family is suing the funeral home for emotional distress and negligence. Their attorney, Elvis Tran, noted, “Instead of mourning and honoring their loved ones, they are searching for bodies.” He also expressed dismay over the funeral home’s failure to provide adequate care, especially considering the hefty fees associated with their services.
After over an hour of confusion, the funeral home finally located Espinosa’s body, allowing the service to proceed.
While rare, similar tragic errors by funeral directors do occur. For instance, in October, a funeral home in Camden, New Jersey, faced a lawsuit from a family whose deceased loved one was displayed in someone else’s clothes. Additionally, a troubled funeral home in New York City transferred the remains of a 96-year-old grandmother to Guatemala instead of her home in Ecuador, resulting in further lawsuits.
