Gabbard cautions about the risk of terrorism from 18,000 potential suspects in the US

Concerns Over Terrorism and Immigration Policies

Director of National Intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard, has raised alarms regarding suspected terrorists in the U.S., criticizing the Biden administration for what she describes as “direct threats” to American citizens.

According to the National Counterterrorism Center, roughly 18,000 known or suspected terrorists were permitted entry into the country during the prior administration. Gabbard expressed concern, stating, “There’s still so much we don’t know yet.” She added that the current administration has not adequately addressed its responsibilities to review these entries.

Criticism of Immigration Policies

Gabbard’s remarks followed a critique of Democrat Bennie Thompson’s stance on a recent National Guard shooting, which he referred to as an “unfortunate accident.” The previous Trump administration had notably challenged the Biden administration’s approach to immigration and vetting procedures, which they claim have been too lenient. During his presidency, Trump pushed for a robust crackdown on illegal immigration.

Of the nearly 18,000 individuals, about 2,000 were Afghan nationals who arrived in the U.S. following the withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021. Although over 100,000 Afghans were evacuated during that period, many lawmakers believe the speed of the evacuations compromised thorough vetting processes.

Gabbard noted that whistleblowers involved in the vetting process reported being pressured to expedite the assessments to facilitate quicker entry for migrants. “They were told to skip thorough checks to get these people into the U.S.,” she stated, calling the situation “catastrophic” with real-world implications already being observed.

“What we are witnessing right now is the very result of Americans’ lives being directly threatened, resulting in tragedies like the one we experienced with the Thanksgiving shooting,” Gabbard concluded. This incident involved two National Guard members, one of whom was killed and the other critically injured, with the suspect identified as an Afghan national.
