Gabe Davis meeting with the Steelers after his visit with the Giants in free agency

Gabe Davis Visits Steelers Amid Free Agency

Gabe Davis, a former wide receiver for the Jaguars, is currently exploring his free agency options, and his next stop is with the Steelers on Thursday. This follows a visit he had with the Giants last month, as reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

At just 26, Davis’s arrival could bolster Pittsburgh’s receiving lineup, especially after they traded away standout George Pickens to the Cowboys in a major deal back in May.

The Steelers’ depth chart now features notable players, including two-time Pro Bowlers DK Metcalf, Robert Woods, and Calvin Austin III, as well as tight end Pat Freyermuth.

Recently, the Steelers also considered a trade for Dolphins tight end John Nusmith. However, according to Schefter’s report, the team is not expected to proceed with a trade, as Smith is looking for a new contract.

Drafted in 2020, Davis spent four seasons with the Bills before signing a hefty three-year, $39 million contract with the Jaguars in March. Unfortunately, his performance was limited; he recorded only 20 catches for 239 yards and two touchdowns before suffering a meniscus tear in his left knee, leading to his shutdown for the season.

Jacksonville parted ways with Davis last month, and the Giants could be a viable landing spot due to his past connection with head coach Brian Daboll from their time at Buffalo.

During his last year with the Bills, Davis had impressive stats, racking up 45 catches and seven touchdowns for a total of 746 yards.

If the Steelers make a strong move for Davis, a pertinent question arises: who will be throwing him the ball this season?

The quarterback situation in Pittsburgh is still uncertain, with Aaron Rodgers hinting at the possibility of joining the team. For now, however, he remains under contract while backup Mason Rudolph is taking first-team reps during OTAs.

Rodgers, at 41, has indicated he needs to address personal matters before deciding on his football career. Meanwhile, it’s unclear whether Davis and Rodgers will indeed come together in Pittsburgh for the upcoming season.
