There’s no way the Mets could sink any further.
This was the idea of Gary Cohen, the team’s longtime live broadcaster on SNY. He lamented the situation in the second half of Thursday’s doubleheader against the Tigers, before his team rallied to win 2-1. Bottom of the 9th inning.
“There’s no one in the ballpark. 0-5. No hits until the seventh inning. I feel like rock bottom,” Cohen said.
Things would soon look a little brighter as Harrison Bader got his first hit for the team in the bottom of the eighth inning, followed by a solo home run by Pete Alonso to tie the game at 1-1. Ninth.
In the bottom of the 9th inning, Tyrone Taylor singled off Brett Batty, giving the Mets their first walk-off win of the season.
The Mets opened the season with a blowout win at home against the Brewers, then lost the first two games of the series against the Tigers.
“That’s something we have to overcome,” outfielder Brandon Nimmo said after the sweep against Milwaukee. “If we lost three in a row now, if we lost three in a row in June, it would be the same question. We just focus on the next game. We’re going to have bad times this year, so we dealt with them at the beginning. It might be better.”
The first half of Thursday’s doubleheader was especially painful. The Mets led 3-0 after five innings, but lost the lead and ultimately lost 6-3 in the 11th inning.
Before the doubleheader, new Mets manager Carlos Mendoza spoke candidly about how surprised he was by the sluggish start to the season.
“Honestly, it wasn’t what I expected,” Mendoza said.
“We’ve been through a lot, especially in the first series…We just have to keep going, prepare and rely on our players and coaches. We’ll get through it.”
